With Partial metering, it doesn't
matter whether the EOS user is shooting with a wide-angle, telephoto or zoom lens
since the exposure values that are taken into consideration, are based on the area
it is aimed at. The two photos below are shot with a wide-angle (left) and a telephoto
zoom lens (right). In both cases, the Partial meter was aimed at the apartment building.

Most built-in light meters are
liable to give the wrong exposure due to the fact they are designed to read data
based on 18 per cent gray. Whenever you encounter a situation having strong differences
between the highlight and shadow areas, just use the Partial metering mode of your
EOS camera and aim it on any neutral scale subject matter.
A neutral scale subject matter
is anything that is not under heavy shadow or in either black, white, gray or dark
green in colour. Any other colours like blue, yellow, red, purple, orange, bronze
or skin tones of Asians or Caucasians are excellent subjects where precise exposure
readings can be obtained with the built-in Partial metering feature.
