Which EF lens to use?
In the previous issue, the focus was on which EOS camera to use for you to
create better pictures with. It was also mentioned that the choice of which camera
was not important as choosing the right lens to shoot the image you had pre-visualized.
After all, it is the lens that records the image on film. The camera is merely a
light-tight black box that holds the film.
Choosing which lens to use is
itself another dilemma for the aspiring beginner and amateur photographer. For Canon
EOS users, there are over 50 superb EF lenses to choose, from a full-frame 15mm fish-eye,
Tilt & Shift lenses, Macros, zooms and up to a specially-made-to-order EF 1200mm
super telephoto lens.

The 1200mm lens, is of course,
targeted at the high-end users, like news and picture agencies, professional photographers
or government agencies, and cost more than any new 1500cc or 1800cc sedan car, including
any 4x4 automobile that is currently available in the market. And there are less
than 10 units of this lens sold so far, worldwide.
The problem faced by beginners
and amateur photographers is something which I can relate to - having gone through
the same thing almost two decades ago, when my skills and knowledge about photography
were still next to nothing, except the desire to be able to shoot those beautiful
pictures as published in
Which lens to choose can be narrowed
down much better once you have mastered the fundamentals of photography as well as
the composition and framing techniques needed to create better pictures. These include
the three essential questions that you ask yourself prior to clicking the shutter.
For those who have skipped the first fifteen issues of this column, here's a rephrase
of what these three questions are:
- What is the theme you would like
the picture to convey?
- How do you focus attention to
the main subject in the picture?
- Simplify the elements. What should
you include or exclude?
These, and the mastery of the
various fundamentals of photography as described in the earlier issues of The Art
of Photography, will supply you with all the information you will ever need in creating
better pictures with your EOS camera, including which lens to choose from the over
50 optics available in the EF line-up.
