For the more discerning ones,
the photos shown so far were all shot in foreign countries, the FIM Asia Road Racing
Championship was captured in Sentul circuit, Indonesia, the race promoters at the
European Motorcycle Championship in Most, Czech Republic, and the Photokina Trade
Show at Cologne, Germany.
Since this column is part of Canon
Malaysia's camera homepage, let's shift the attention to shooting candid shots locally.
My favorite lens for candid photography is the EF 20-35mm f/2.8L AFD zoom. Of course,
there is also the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM, the EF 80-200mm f/2.8L AFD and the EF 70-200mm
f/2.8L USM zoom lenses as well.
The EF 20-35mm AFD zoom lens is
great for shooting indoor candid due to its fast f/2.8 maximum aperture. This lens
was developed for two purposes: travel photography and photojournalism. Since candid
photography is also part of travel shots, this lens is invaluable for those situations
you want to show where your candid photos were taken.

Like the foreign countries, the
local Malaysian motor racing scene is one area where superb candid shots are possible,
if you have the access ID tag to cover such events. You need to attend some of those
events before you have an idea of what the atmosphere is like.
Candid photography inside a racing
circuit is not restricted to just the action on the track. Activities unfolding on
the pit-lane, paddocks, spectators' area and the starting grid are places where great
candid shots are possible.
While most of the people involved
in this sport are happy to pose for pictures, capturing them while they are unaware
make for better results. A posed photo is a snapshot, capturing the people involved
as well as the atmosphere of a race event when they least expect it is candid photography.
