Using Canon's EF zoom lenses to
create beautiful pictures.
Canon's speedy autofocus makes zoom lenses even more enjoyable to use. Now you can
concentrate more on composing your shots by using the multiple angles of view and
perspectives which zoom lenses are so popularly associated with.
Zoom lenses are especially useful in landscape photography, giving you greater composition
freedom without sacrificing performance. Fixed focal length lenses often force you
to change your shooting position just to get the desired composition.
With a zoom lens, you can stay put and frame your subjects, simply by lengthening
or shortening focal distance, knowing that each photo will be sharp and concise.
This flexibility removes the need to crop your prints or 35mm color slides later.
Canon's EF zooms, which anchor a system of more than 55 lenses and accessories, range
in focal length from 17mm super wide-angle to 400mm super telephoto. This range includes
the L-series types that have redefined the boundaries of zoom lens photography -
the EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM, the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM.
The f/2.8 maximum aperture rating of these zoom lenses matches the speed of many
single focal length models without compromising image quality. The EF range also
offers zoom lenses with high magnification ranges, such as the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5
USM and the EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, so you can concentrate on your composition.
Moreover, the USM ensures superior application. If portability is a concern, you
can use Canon's ultracompact Micro USM models instead. There are several models to
choose from, like the EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM, EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 USM or the EF
75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III USM.
Standard EF zoom lenses
A standard zoom lens ensures a good introduction to the world of Single-Lens-Reflex
(SLR) photography. Standard zooms are popular, easy-to-carry lenses with a broad
range of uses ranging from a wide-angle 24mm and standard 50mm focal lengths for
natural subject rendition to medium telephoto types that are useful for capturing
close and excluding distracting background detail.
A standard zoom lens is extremely versatile. With one lens, you can shoot anything
from family photos to travel snapshots, landscapes and news photos. Newcomers to
35mm SLR photography are recommended to sue a standard zoom lens with its array of
viewing angles allowing you to zoom in tight for close-ups or zoom out for expansive
landscapes and group photos.
