The Program AE mode lets you concentrate
on composing your subject and leave the settings of shutter speed and aperture control
to the camera. You only need to focus, whether by AF or manually turning the focusing
ring and shoot. With most camera brands offering the Aperture-priority mode as an
automatic exposure control, Canon decided early on with the AE-1 camera that selecting
the shutter speed was far more important than using aperture control for semi-automation
convenience.
Aperture is used mainly for controlling
the depth-of-field in a given photography situation, whether it is for deeper zone
of sharpness or selective focus. Shutter speed, on the other hand, is used to control
the movement of the subject and prevent camera shake. Take for example, if you want
to record images of children playing, the aperture you select using Aperture-priority
AE mode may not be fast enough to freeze their movements. With Shutter-priority AE,
you can select a shutter speed fast enough to freeze any movement.
Which will you prefer? A photo
of a sharp background with moving blurs (the children) or a shot that shows the children
clearly with a slightly out-of-focus background - a fast shutter speed requires a
larger aperture and limited depth-of-field zone.
The camera chooses the aperture
setting for you automatically when you use your manual focus Canon or EOS camera
in its Shutter-priority AE mode, leaving you free to concentrate on the more important
aspects of your creativity efforts. If the shutter speed selected is too fast or
too slow that may cause either over- or under-exposed pictures, your Canon camera
will warn you in advance so you can alter the setting to a level that will ensure
correct exposure, any time you wish.
