For those who have already read
the 30th issue of Nuts and Bolts column before surfing in this section, I have also
mentioned that the supplied EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III zoom lens can be used for available
light shooting with the EOS 88 SLR camera. However, there are certain situations
in available light shooting where the EF zoom lens is not able to handle. This is
where having more than one lens comes in handy when face with such situations. For
these two photos below, the use of the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens allowed me to shoot
the nighttime scenes depicted with a shutter speed of 1/15 sec at f/1.4 using Partial
metering.

The camera's Evaluative metering
suggested exposure settings of 1/8 sec. at f/1.4 for the first photo and 1/6 for
the Twin Towers. Using Partial metering, I was able to shoot at 1/15 at f/1.4 for
both photos, ignoring the EOS 88's suggestions with the Evaluative metering mode.
It may sound as though I was deliberately underexposing these two photos but I am
not. Due to the relatively small highlights area, the Evaluative meter simply couldn't
provide the accurate readings for both photos.
Now that I have shown the EOS
88 users how their cameras can be used effectively for available light shooting,
it is time to shift to the outdoor photo possibilities using more or less the same
EF lenses as the previous as well as those that were shot with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L
USM zoom lens. Just for the users' information, all the photos shown in the available
light category were recorded with ISO 100 color reversal film, and not high speed
ISO 400 or ISO 800 film.
