More ways to extend the usage of the respective themes in your photography.

In issue 10, I showed you how to make use of Question No: One, which focused on the theme to create the effects you wanted for your pictures. Among the themes suggested in that issue were color, abstracts and close-ups.

Take for example, colors. This theme, generally defined as anything colorful that has been recorded on film, is considered as having achieved your target. To elaborate on this particular theme, you can divide it into several versions, and shoot your pictures based on each of the individual colors.

In this issue, I will show what sort of photos can be achieved after the theme of "Color" has been divided into "Reds, Blues, Greens and Yellows" respectively. Any photo can be considered as having successfully conformed to its theme if the percentage achieved is a minimum of 30 per cent of the image area. If you can get 50 per cent or more, that's even better.

In some cases, the theme itself may not consist of the main subject but the surrounding area as well. When you look at these pictures, remember to ask yourself how I subject them to conform to Q2 and Q3 as well as which of the fundamentals of photography are used to create the photos.

Theme: Reds

Frosted Coke can (100mm Macro)

Red Wall (EF 70-200mm)

Close-up of a tomato ketchup (100mm Macro)

Team mechanics taking a break (EF 70-200mm)

As I have explained previously in issue 12, the close-up shot of the frosted Coke can idea materialised when I was drinking from one and started to realize that a wonderful image can be made by focusing on the bubbles that have formed on the can upon contact with warm air after taking it out from the refrigerator. A 100mm Macro or any EF single focal length lens fitted with either the Extension Tube EF 12 or EF 25 can be utilized to shoot close-ups like this. The red wall? Well, its vibrant color attracted my attention in the first place. The black part was also the wall in another color scheme. The tomato ketchup bottle probably wasn't a big deal but the use of softer 90-degree side lighting added some contrast to the shot.

I don't think the photo of the mechanics had achieved the minimum 30 per cent level of the theme but since they were the main subjects, the attention was primarily focused on them with those in the background of secondary importance. Anyway, I had shot this originally using the theme of "Motorsports," rather than "Reds." However, if you are choosing this theme exclusively for a new photo session, then it is okay if all the shots do show some percentages of the color red.

Motorcycle races are always a colorful sport, since the leather suits the riders are wearing and their bikes are full of various colors, representing their sponsors or teams. And there are no shortages of using the theme of "Reds" here or any other color, for that matter.
