Using the Canon EOS-3 in Program AE mode with its 21-zone Evaluative metering.

When the Canon EOS-3 was launched in September 1998, some have predicted that this camera would be a successor to the popular EOS 5 (EOS A2/A2E in North America) and others have praised it as the replacement for the top-of-the-line EOS-1N pro model Unfortunately, neither of these predictions were correct as the EOS. 1N had remain the top~of-the-line EOS (until February 1, 2000) and the EOS 5 is still in production and sells by the thou~nds worldwide.

The EOS-3, defined as a semi-pro 3Smm AF SLR by Canon and targeted at both the professionals and advanced amateurs, is loaded with more features than anyone will probably need. Among its features are: 45-point Area AF, 7 fps firing rate with the PB-E2 loaded with the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2, 21-zone Evaluative metering as well as Partial, Fine Spot, AF-linked Spot, Multi-spot and Center-weighted average, six exposure modes including E-TTL automatic flash, capable of Wireless Autoflash with any Canon EX-series of Speedlites, Costom Functions and much more.

Of course, the 45-point Area AF, its 7 fps film advance rate and the E-TTL Wireless Autoflash are the main attractions of the EQS-3 These features are also the deciding factors that have attracted the attentions of the advanced amateurs, even though most of them may have little or zero understanding of how they work. Come to think of it, neither did some of the professionals, at least in the early stages of the EOS-3's commercial availability

With so many features to choose from, it can be very daunting for any EOS-3 owner to select and use the best method possible in order to accomplish the picture-making process simple and error-free As I have pointed out in issue No. 15 of using the Program AE feature of the EOS cameras, where you can simply use this exposure mode together with the camera's Evaluative metering mode, to just aim, AF and shoot. And stop worrying about everytbing else. This issue is dealing with just that with the EOS-3. Set it to its 21-zone Evaluative metering and Intelligent Program AE mode and you are ready to shoot. You will be surprised at the results.

More popularly known as the P mode (althougb some professionals likes to refer to the P as meaning "Professional" or "Perfect"), this exposure feature allows the user to concentrate solely on the subject placement in the viewfinder and tbe camera's AF response before clicking the shutter button, leaving bim/her free from complicated calculations.
