For those users who have the EOS-3, complete with Speedlite 550EX and PB-E2 as well as the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2, the choice of buying the EOS-1v as an additional body is easier than those who have none - especially if they are currently an EOS 50/50E (EOS Elan II/IIe) or the EOS 5 (EOS A2/A2E) owner.

Okay, I think this is enough rambling on why some users shouldn't get too excited of not having enough funds to buy the EOS-1v complete with all its standard accessories in order to get the maximum features available with this great camera. Now I will show you that you don't really need to depend on the standard accessories of the EOS-1v in order to create the pictures you seek.

Most of you will remember the first two photos shown below of Richie Ren, Tarcy Su and Yuki Hsu since they were part of the same batch of photos I shot with the EOS-1v when I first got hold of a test unit (minus the PB-E2 and instruction manual) from Canon Malaysia. I had the EOS-1v fitted to a PDB-E1 instead. However, the photos were indeed illuminated with the Speedlite 550EX since I was also testing the EOS-3 just before the EOS-1v was handed over to me by Canon.

Clock shot using Partial metering

Available light shooting with PDB-E1

The first photo was shot with the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, with the camera set in its P mode and the 550EX in E-TTL. The second photo was shot with the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM zoom lens, also in Program E-TTL flash mode. I had also tested the EOS-3 with the PDB-E1 and it was not until the Year 2000 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix drew nearer, did I request for test versions of the PB-E2 and the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 from Canon Malaysia.

The clock in the next photo was shot with the EOS-1v set in its Partial metering mode. Exposure was locked with the AE Lock button using the center AF point. The EOS-1v was used alone without any booster and powered by only the 2CR5 6V lithium battery in its standard grip as both the PB-E2 and Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 units have since been returned to Canon. In Page Five, surfers will be able to read more about using the Partial metering mode with the EOS-1v.

The models in the fashion show were shot under available light using ISO 64 tungsten-balanced film, hence the slightly bluish cast in the background where some daylight-balanced source was evident. This photo was shot with the EOS-1v and EF 80-200mmm f/2.8L AFD zoom lens using the PDB-E1 loaded with eight AA-size alkaline batteries. Custom Function C. Fn 13-2 was used for this shot, which enabled the manually selected focusing point to be linked to the Spot metering of the EOS-1v.
