When the EOS-1v is used with either
the PDB-E1 or PB-E2 loaded with eight AA-size alkaline or lithium batteries, the
AF responsiveness in tracking moving subjects via AI Servo AF mode is the same even
though the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 is not available. What you lack in this set-up is the
9 fps firing rate but the 5 fps option with the PDB-E1 or PB-E2 with AA batteries
is more than enough for a catwalk fashion show as these four photos below have shown:

Since I had gotten used to PB-E2
with the EOS-1v prior to this catwalk session, it was a bit awkward whenever I tried
to alter the shutter speed vertically, only to realize that I was no longer using
the PB-E2 but the PDB-E1 instead, which did not feature a vertically positioned Main
Dial and AF Selection button.
Using Speedlite 540EZ and 3-zone TTL Flash metering
Users of the EOS-1N/1N RS will not set their cameras on Program AE with the Speedlite
540EZ in A-TTL mode. The algorithm of the EOS-1N/540EZ in A-TTL mode means it will
set smaller apertures at the expense of darker backgrounds amidst correct exposures
for the main subject. With the 540EZ fitted to the EOS-1v in Program AE (A-TTL) mode,
it was a surprise that this combination did not go the usual route as with the EOS-1N/1N
RS cameras. In fact, background exposure with the EOS-1v/540EZ via A-TTL Program
AE mode is almost similar to an exposure made with E-TTL on a 550EX (see photo of
the dancers below). However, this combo was not able to retain the ambient light
atmosphere like a 550EX would.

Using the EOS-1v with the Speedlite 540EZ in Tv, Manual and Av modes showed a different
atmosphere altogether from those shot in Program A-TTL Flash. With the 540EZ set
in TTL flash, the EOS-1v has again reverted to the 3-zone flash metering mode - automatically
selected whenever TTL flash is being used. As can be seen from the next three photos
above, the overall illuminations in them suggest no serious limitations in using
the EOS-1v with an EZ-series Speedlite, in this case the 540EZ.
On the next page, I will show a few more examples of how the EOS-1v was used in the
Tv mode (my favorite) with the Speedlite 540EZ via TTL flash. There is also another
example shot in Manual with the 540EZ in TTL mode.
