Bounce flash is not a problem
for whichever EOS camera is used, regardless of the Speedlite. Of course, the best
mode to use bounce flash is via Shutter-priority AE (Tv). If an EZ-series Speedlite
is used on the EOS-1v, the default flash setting will again be the 3-zone TTL metering.
With an EX-series Speedlite, the camera will automatically go into E-TTL flash metering
in Tv mode - unless the C. Fn of the Speedlite has been set to TTL instead (only
possible on the 550EX).

With EOS cameras, it is easy to
switch from one mode to the other just by pushing the required buttons and turning
the Main Dial. In the above case with the EOS-1v, I was able to shoot the two Miss
Malaysia beauties first in TTL Tv mode, and then turned around and photographed two
friends in the same setting while the beauty queens were still trying to untangle
themselves, switched the camera from Tv to M and managed to capture the shot of the
two almost having freed themselves from the ticker tape.
With the examples I have shown in these issue, there is no reason why the EOS-1v
cannot be used without its standard accessories. True, you will not be able to get
the maximum features without the standard accessories but using the older ones designed
for the EOS-1v's predecessors like the PDB-E1, BP-E1 and the 540EZ, you will still
be able to capitalize on 70 per cent of the EOS-1v's capabilities.
Using the EOS-1v with Partial metering
Using the Partial metering (plus Spot and Multi-spot) with the EOS-1v is not
included with the main topic of this issue but the photos presented over here and
the next two pages were also shot with the camera using the barest amount of accessories,
which in this case, was the standard battery grip with 2CR5 6V battery. Using the
EOS-1v in this metering mode is no different from say, the EOS-1N/1N RS or the EOS-3
(as shown in last issue) or any of the entry-level EOS models having the Partial
meter.

The above three photos are some
of the examples with which the EOS-1v can be used with its Partial metering mode
whenever the needs arise. Note that any of these photos can also be shot successfully
with the EOS-1v's 21-zone Evaluative metering system. However, you have to remember
that unlike the Evaluative, the exposure cannot be memorized by the camera upon confirmation
of focus in One Shot AF mode, and the AE Lock button has to be utilized for such
purposes.
