Using the EOS-1v in its Spot and Multi-spot Metering Mode

Using the EOS-1v in its Spot and Multi-spot metering modes are quite easy if you are already an owner of the Canon T90 or the EOS-3. Users of the original EOS-1 and EOS-1N/1N RS won't have any problems in using this camera in its Spot metering mode, either. But as with the Evaluative and Partial metering, any subject matter can be used with the Spot meter. There are two things to remember, though. First, like the Partial meter, exposure will not be locked upon confirmation of focus when the EOS-1v is used in One Shot AF mode. Second, be extremely careful when only a single Spot reading is being used to meter a subject - if the subject is in the shadow, the highlight area will be overexposed. Likewise, if the metered area is in the highlights, those in the shadows will be underexposed.

A single spot meter reading was used on the photo of the yellow boards above (they are actually windows) while for the next photo, multi-spot readings were used on the parked bikes, car and van in the foreground and the buildings in the background. The resulting exposure is perfect, nonetheless. A single point spot reading on the pink area of the background building in the other photo enabled a correct exposure rendition for the overall scene.

Below are four more examples of how the EOS-1v was used in its Spot and Multi-spot metering modes. The first photo was shot with readings from the foreground signage and two other points from the buildings in the background. On the next photo, three readings were obtained, from the grass, the mosque and one of the trees. A single spot meter reading was all that was required for the exposure on the two guys at the telephone booths.

On the final photo, Multi-spot metering was used on the photo of the news vendor and his customers as well as the bright yellow background. Of course, you can also ignore the background altogether and have a nice, overexposed blob as the end result.
