Using ISO 100 film for shooting outdoor sporting events

When it comes to shooting outdoor sporting actions, professional photographers prefer to use fine-grain and slower speed film emulsions. Of course, they will also pack some high-speed films just in case the weather turns bad, resulting in slower shutter speeds that could not be used to freeze the action. Color reversal films are still the preferred choice for many freelance sports photographers although those working in the newspapers and sports picture agencies have already switched over to color negative films and high-end digital SLR cameras like the Canon EOS D2000 model.

Outdoor sporting events are many. They include American football and baseball, rugby, Nascar racing, F1 autoracing, FIM Championships, Endurance racing, World Rally Championship, Fifa World Cup soccer, the Summer Olympics, World Athletics Championship, Track and Field, Tennis, Cycling, Marathon, Yachting, etc.

Not all the pictures are concentrated on the action since the professional photographers will also photograph other interesting scenes like candid shots of the athletes, drivers and riders during their breaks or behaviors on and off the venues, the colors and atmosphere, the crowd and incidents, if any. However, all of these major sporting events an only be accredited to professional photographers. Even I am not accredited to cover most of the events mentioned above. What I am accredited to cover are motorsports and here are some of the photos that I have shot of them below, all using ISO 100 film.

Colorful attires and uniforms have different hues on them and slower emulsions are the best choice to record them faithfully. The ISO 100 film is one such example. The Marlboro reds of Checa's leathers and bike have a glowing tendency in them and only slower and medium-speed films are able to render the colors correctly. Notice that Rossi's leathers have a cooler yellow as opposed to his bike's warmer rendition. The photo of Abe was shot when the sun had disappeared behind the clouds, resulting in the darker atmosphere. Canon's IS telephoto lens allowed me to shoot this image by panning at a slower shutter speed using an ISO 100 speed film. Almost such a similar atmosphere for the shot of 500cc World Champion Alex Criville.
