For the last two pictures on the
previous page, the inclusion of human elements caused them to be out of context with
the idea of searching for ordinary-looking elements to shoot. I won't know how the
scenario will be in other countries but over here in Malaysia as well as in Singapore,
Hong Kong and Taiwan, it is normal for Canon and other multinational companies to
launch their new products in public places, like a shopping mall where all parties
- including users of the competitors' equipment - are welcome to attend and capture
the events on film.
For the backlit shot, you have a couple of choices when it comes to having someone
to pose for you:
1) Hire a professional model
2) Look for an amateur model (parents, brother, sister, cousin, neighbor, classmate
or office colleague)
3) Ask your boyfriend/girlfriend/fiance/fiancee
4) Get your husband/wife to do so
If shooting posed human subjects is not among your list of favorite subjects, then
the idea of shooting still-life, the local neighborhood and other city scenes will
be the alternative. When shooting scenes like these, always try to look for something
different and avoid the usual camera angles that have been portrayed countless of
times by professionals via postcards and travel magazines. See the examples below
(Malaysian users would know exactly where these locations are). Some foreign examples
will be shown in the next couple of pages.

Having your camera gear with you
most of the time is also one way to ensure that you will get great pictures when
the occasion calls for it. More often than not, you will come across some of the
most beautiful sights or exciting scenes when you are running the weekly errands
or simply doing other chores like sending the kids off to school, returning the video
tapes back to the rental outlets and on the way to pick up the laundry. Take the
sunrise sky (below) for example. If I didn't have my camera with me at that time,
the result would not have been captured. Likewise, going to a recreational park can
also have picture possibilities as the sights and colors will lead you to pre-visualize
the best way of capturing them on film, like this group of boats mooring on the lake
side.
