Next on the list is candid photography.
In any motorsport championship, candid photography is very easy to get pictures of.
Most of the photos of the Race Queens on the previous page were posed shots. On this
page, the combination of the EOS 5's Evaluative metering and Program AE mode also
made things easy for candid photography.

Crew member adjusting the car |

The first photo above was shot
with the EOS 5's built-in flash as the ISO 100 film used and the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5
USM zoom lens do not allow a handhold able shutter speed to record this scene without
flash. For the next shot of the crew member, the Image Stabilizer feature of the
EF 75-300mm IS USM allowed me to shoot the scene at slower shutter speed of only
1/15 sec. handheld. The outdoor shot (below, left) was easy - I framed the scene
at the 300mm setting of the EF 75-300mm IS USM, focused on the man with the cap (left),
waited for the right moment and clicked. This is the result. As for the close-up
shot of the Race Queen, it was a case of waiting for her gaze and clicked the shutter
when she did exactly that.
The Image Stabilizer lens was
again used for the shot of the masked driver. Actually the camera recommended shutter
speed in P mode was more than enough to avoid camera shake (1/125 sec) at this setting
of 200mm but the IS feature has been left switched on most of the time when I went
around the pits for candid photography. The lone driver against the quite-empty seatings
(shot during qualifying day) of the Grandstand was given more impact at the 300mm
treatment as the compressed telephoto perspective made it look as though the background
was very near.
Still-life and abstract photography are other classic examples of other subject matters
that can be photographed with the EOS 5 in its Program AE mode and 16-zone Evaluative
metering combination. All the participating cars had different colors and brandings
on them, representing their respective sponsors and teams, so a shot like this one
below, was not that difficult to achieve.

Race tyres and rims |

The shot of the tyres and rims above happened to be one of those situations that
I came across while trying to look for interesting subjects to shoot with the EOS
5. Of course, this was one of the angles I had with these tyres, not necessarily
the best of the lot but will do nicely where the Program AE/Evaluative metering combination
is concerned.
