Using the Canon EOS 5 in Shutter-priority
AE mode with its Evaluative metering.

A Porsche car in action |
The above scene is typical of
what one can expect in using Shutter-priority AE (Tv) mode with Canon's EOS 35mm
and 24mm SLR cameras. In this issue, the focus is on using the EOS 5 in its Tv mode
together with the 16-zone Evaluative metering. The advantage of using the Tv mode
is the photographer can choose whether to go for a higher or slower shutter speed
to capture the scene he/she wants on film.
A high shutter speed is essential to freezing the movements of fast-moving subjects
or to prevent camera shake. Slower shutter speeds allow the photographer to create
effects like a sense of motion by panning the camera and following the moving subject.
The photographer also has the discretion to simply shoot the subject like it is,
for an example, a fast flowing river or waterfall and capture the waters in a flowing
manner.

On the EOS 5, using the Shutter-priority AE mode is a matter of turning the Command
Dial towards the TV index. Next, just set the desired shutter speed using the Main
Input Dial and it will be displayed on the LCD panel of the camera. All the photographer
has to do now is to aim the EOS 5 at the intended subject, set the focus by pressing
the shutter button halfway (which also locks the exposure reading in Evaluative metering)
and shoot.
As most EOS 5 users already know, using the camera in One Shot AF with the 16-zone
Evaluative metering will automatically lock exposure settings upon autofocus confirmation
in any AE modes, including Tv. This method will spare the users the need of using
the AE Lock feature, which is located at the back of the camera, next to the AF points'
selection button.
But using the camera in AI Servo AF mode, the metering is done in real time, up to
the moment of exposure. In reality, this is an advantage to the photographer since
the subject can be moving from one spot to another, of which the original point of
tracking may not have the same level of brightness as the final place just prior
to exposure. Nevertheless, using the EOS 5 in its Tv mode with the 16-zone Evaluative
metering was fun, especially since all the photos presented here in this issue were
shot during the AFOS championship held at the Sepang F1 circuit. The EF lenses used
were the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and EF 300mm f/2.8L
USM.
