This special program, which is unique only
to the EOS 35mm AF SLR cameras, makes it a lot easier to maintain very precise control
over depth-of-field. You use the AF system to determine your zone of in-focus elements.
First, you select the point farthest away that must be in focus by using the AF function,
then you select another focus point by focusing at the nearest point in your intended
image. The camera automatically chooses the optimum focusing position and aperture
setting to reproduce the exact zone of focus you have chosen.
Here are six pictures showing how the Depth AE mode of EOS cameras work. The first
set of pictures of a tree and buildings while the second set are of flags and flowers.
Each set show how the respective Depth 1 and 2 were set and the final Depth AE results.
You can also use this technique to ensure a very shallow depth-of-field, since
by setting the nearest and farthest points at the same place, only that distance
will be in focus.
