On this page, the two batches of pictures presented have their themes centering on compressed perspective.

Theme: Compressed Perspective

The LRT (below, top left) was from a sequence shot with the EOS-1V model and the EF 80-200mm f/2.8L AFD zoom lens. The lens' barrel was just enough to squeeze through a gap between the fencings that prevent people from crossing the electrically-charged tracks. At the 200mm focal length, the whole perspective, including the buildings in the background, was tightly compressed, typical for a telephoto angle. Next, the Petronas Twin Towers seen here, were actually photographed at 300mm from eight kilometers away. The compressed perspective of the 300mm lens made it look as though the Twin Towers were just behind those trees.

Lippo Towers and overhead bridge

Hong Kong SAR's (Special Administrative Region) famous twin Lippo Towers were photographed at 200mm together with other nearby buildings and framed by an overhead bridge. This picture does not show much, other than conforming to its theme and the attention was focused on the buildings and less on the bridge, which also gave an indication of the sizes of all subject matters. This picture (below, top left) is another familiar image, also part of the EOS-1V field-test. Shot with a 100mm lens, the amount of compression and tight composition provided the impact. Next, the performer was photographed with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM at a slow shutter speed of 1/8 sec. on ISO 100 film. The motion produced by the slow speed of her swirling hands provided an added touch to the compressed perspective theme - the background looked closer to her than it really was.

The final two pictures from above also show the use of tight compositions in addition to the compressed perspective outlook to achieve the final results. In addition to the theme and the fundamentals used, don't forget that the two other essential questions of "Focus attention on the subject" and "Simplifying the scene" are also part and parcel of all the pictures presented in this issue. Regardless of the fundamentals applied, you will see that the main objectives of the two other essential questions are always apparent in the pictures.
