Theme: Selective Focus

This theme is quite easy to achieve, which is much more pronounced with a telephoto focal length than it is with Super wide-angles or wide-angle lenses. Simply stated, the idea is to shoot your subjects by isolating them from the busy or distracting backgrounds. In this case, the use of fundamentals, such as wider apertures and higher focal lengths, is recommended. Wider apertures already allow you to have shallow depth-of-field and in telephoto lenses, they are even more pronounced as compared to using wide-angles.

By isolating the main subject from the background, both the objectives in Q2 and Q3 are automatically achieved. Like the close-up shot of these bamboo shoots (below, top left) or the men carrying the phoenix statue with a maiden inside (below, top right) although the blurred background was not really that out-of-focus.

Japan GT Racing's Race Queens

A fill-in flash (above, bottom left) made the already darkened part of the background worse since the model's silhouette added to the shadow area. For the GT Racing's Race Queens, the lighting used here was backlit, another fundamental. I would have preferred the people in the background to completely disappear before clicking the shutter but couldn't expect the Race Queens to wait around all day for them to pose for you. At another angle, this time of their respective backsides (below), by zooming in to this close-up viewpoint, you can guess exactly what was happening in this picture anyway.

For the team crew at work, only one out of the three mechanics (near the windscreen) was in focus, together with the front part of the GT car. However, depending on the resolution of your Windows PC or Macintosh monitor, this may not be that apparent anyway.

For the GT cars themselves, the first was shot while it was cruising along the pitlane on its way to the race track and the next one was captured while approaching Turn Nine of the Sepang F1 circuit. As mentioned earlier, telephotos give shallower depth-of-field and are excellent for shooting pictures having selective focus theme and isolated the main subjects from distracting backgrounds.
