As I have mentioned in issue No: 50 of Real-time ,shooting with the Canon EOS-1N RS camera, where the lenses used for the Japan GT cars racing festival were the EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM in addition to the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM and Extender EF 2x. Throughout the three-day event, about 70 per cent of the pictures were photographed with the two EF lenses and the balance on the 300mm (25 per cent) and Prima Zoom 76 point-&-shoot AF 35mm compact model.

Assignments like the Japan GT car racing festival as well as the World Motorcycling Championship are events where the EF-L zooms are much more versatile than using any of the prime lenses within the 20mm and 200mm focal lengths. Both the zoom lenses allowed me to fully concentrate on the composition aspects and I don't have to bother with constantly changing the lenses, which would have been the case if I were using prime optics during the Japan GT event. Below are some photos of that racing festival, which were shot with the EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM zoom lenses.

For those who like to travel light, carrying two or three fast aperture prime lenses will make more sense as compared to carrying zooms with large apertures like the two tested in this issue as they are not really lightweight, especially the EF 70-200L version. Then again, the prime lenses will be more suitable for events which do not require the photographer to constantly change lenses in-between the shoots. For events where the drama will unfold right in front of the photographers, nothing beats the zoom lenses for versatility and speed of usage.
