For advanced amateurs and professional
photographers, investing in the high performance EF L-series lenses is the exception
rather than the rule, so choices like the standard trio of EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM,
EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM or the 10x EF 35-350mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
and EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6l IS USM zooms are usually part of their arsenal.
For me, any zoom lens goes, from the entry-level to midrange (have to test them out
anyway) and high performance L-series, like these photos here; the first was shot
in New Orleans with the EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM, the second with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L
USM during the Malaysian launch of the four IS super telephoto lenses, the third
via the EF 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II and the fourth was again captured with the EF 70-200mm
f/2.8L USM.

When it comes to versatility, none is more evident than in covering news assignments,
like a Press conference or photo-calls for celebrities than anything else. Try changing
lenses (if you are using single focal length optics) while others are snapping away
and you will miss the shots, literally. In these shots of Taiwanese artistes taken
at a photo-call , in which only about five minutes were allocated for pixmen, it
was a classic case of snapping them first and then going into other formalities later.

The studio photo was shot using only two Speedlites 550EX and ST-E2 transmitter.
Well, the pose and lighting effects were less than perfect (happened to be those
poor shots during my first time in using the Wireless E-TTL autoflash system), the
versatility of the zoom lens in this aspect was unquestionable. Or the cake-cutting
ceremony, where the 24mm setting of the EF 20-35mm f/2.8l AFD zoom was essential
in getting everyone in, with the fact that there were more than 15 photographers
jostling with one another for this shot.
Basically, in the United States and most parts of the European Community as well
as in Japan and Australia, there is an understanding among professional photographers
where they will not compete for the best angles by jostling and pushing one another
during most events. Their solution is to shoot with telephoto or telephoto zoom lenses
from a distance where all of them will get their desired pictures. In East Asian
countries, pushing and tussling with one another is a common thing, and mind you,
they are equipped with super wide angle zoom lenses!
