Next prosumer lens is the new Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM. This Mk II version zoom lens was used on the night of the first ACMA (Asian Chinese Music Awards), albeit only during the welcoming ceremony of the artistes concerned. Normally, this type of shooting would have been accomplished with a combination of two L-series zoom lenses, the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. The focal length of the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM zoom lens was more than enough for the first phase of that event. Its variable maximum apertures weren't a problem either since an ISO 400 color negative film was used.

Unlike the EF 28-200mm zoom lens, fill-in E-TTL flash illumination was utilized in all of the shots with the EF 28-105mm version, including the four shown above. That's because there were too many tungsten-balanced spotlights used to light up the welcoming area and the fill-in flash in Program E-TTL mode helped to reduce the intensity of the warmer cast.

Remember the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM zoom lens, which was used almost exclusively for the 2000 Formula Asia Championship with the Canon EOS 5? Well, this IS zoom lens happened to be another fine example of a prosumer EF optics that performed to my expectations on actual assignments. I am sure many would remember the close-up abstract shot of the tyres, well, this photo (below, top left) shows the angle-of-view at the 75mm setting. Next, is a candid shot of the familiar Porsche race queen. See the smooth out-of-focus background when the IS zoom lens had its focal length set at the 300mm position and the aperture opened up to f/5.6.

Or the candid shot of the crew member doing last-minute checking of the team's car (above, bottom left) and one of the Porsche cars that took part in the Championship. Yes, the EF 75-300mm IS USM zoom lens is not designed for panning shots with its built-in Image Stabilizer function. But if you know how to pan the camera/lens combination for subjects moving across the frame like the Porsche car effectively with a reasonable shutter speed, there's no need for IS Mode 2, which is available from the IS-type of L-series EF lenses but not on both the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM zoom lenses.
