As mentioned in issue No: 36, I had
chosen to work with single focal length lenses rather than bringing the L-series
EF lenses that I had for the trip to Las Vegas in conjunction with the official debut
of the Canon EOS-1V at the PMA 2000 Show. I had with me three EF lenses: the EF 28mm
f/1.8 USM, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and EF 100mm f/2.0 USM. Camera used was the EOS-1N RS
and although I brought the Speedlite 540EZ along, it was never utilized throughout
the whole trip.
All the films I had with me then were mostly ISO 100 types. Using the EOS-1N RS meant
that I also lost 2/3-stops of light value as compared to any other EOS models - the
large apertures of the three EF lenses were indeed useful. The limitations with the
equipment I had with me for that trip did not stop me from coming back with great
images. I liked to play with backlit situations and this image (below, top left),
shot outside the Vegas' Ballys Hotel, was one of them.
The bluish cast was due to the shadows during the late evening sunlight. The film
used was daylight-balanced, not tungsten version. For nighttime, the f/1.8 maximum
aperture of the 28mm wide-angle lens sure came in handy for this shot of the structure-cum-fountain
that was surrounded by the neon lights. It was also handy for most of the shots encountered
in both LV and LA, as shown in the statue of Harrah's Jester and the promotional
billboards for entertainment at the Mirage, shown above.
Inside the PMA 2000 Show, particularly Canon USA's booth, the EF 100mm f/2.0 USM
lens was used for most of the candid shots. This photo of a visitor at the L-series
lenses tryout stand was shot with the 100mm lens. But it was also cropped too tight.
The same applies to the next one of another visitor trying out the IS binoculars
at another section of the booth.
Each year, the PMA Show, like the bi-annual Photokina held at Cologne, Germany, most
of the booths have their have own entertainment staged for the benefit of the visitors,
usually at half-hourly intervals. Canon USA had a Broadway theme for the 2000 Show,
as seen from the two photos from above, also shot with the EF 100mm f/2.0 USM. Yep,
the stage was lit with both tungsten and other multi-colored lights all the way,
and they were bright enough for exposures of 1/125 sec. with ISO 100 film on the
Canon EOS-1N RS pro camera.
