90° Side Lighting - This type
of side lighting is mainly used for highlighting the texture of the subject especially
in architecture photography and other similar objects having repetitive designs and
structures.
For people photography, this form
of lighting is highly recommended for glamour photography for men. It is however,
not suitable for glamour photography involving women. The strong side lighting effect
will not produce flattering images of women when shot using this type of light as
can be seen in the 90° side lighting photo.
 Backlighting - this is considered
the most creative lighting effect for any subject, especially on portraiture. Portrait
shot using backlighting will have the halo effect on the hair. Use it on other subjects
like buildings, street signs, automobiles, close-ups or still-life, and they will
all have that touch of sparkle that makes the pictures more vivid, compared to using
front lighting.
While all the sample photos shown
above are shot using sunlight as the main light source for all four lighting effects,
they can be substituted with artificial light sources as well. 45° and 90°
side lighting are the most commonly used of lighting effects with studio strobes
for commercial, glamour or still-life photography.
Even
if your subject is photographed using tungsten lighting, other non-daylight balanced
light sources or available light, both types of side lighting effects can also be
achieved. The difference will be your subject having an artificial colour cast on
them due to the non-daylight sources used.
