If they have to ask, it means your pictures have failed in this category and you have to ask yourself why. The last question, on simplification, makes up the other essential element in composing a photograph and complements question number two.

What simplification is all about was also explained briefly in issue No. 1 but there is more to simplification than just simplifying. While it is important to make sure that all distractions in a photograph are kept out as much as possible, there are times when certain types of distractions are allowed in the pictures.

Check photos numbered 1, 3 and 8 again. These photos have some distracting elements in them. The traffic in photo 1 can be classified as distraction but then again; they have to be included in order to match the theme of modernisation.

The incomplete building and construction workers in the background may also serve as another distraction for photo 2 but in this case, they are there to show the situation where the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is actually coming out from.

What do you think of the apartment buildings in the background for Photo 8? Do they need to be there or can they be avoided altogether? Or does the inclusion of the background complement the theme of "Urbanisation" or distract it altogether?

And while you are checking out all the photos shown so far in this issue, don't forget to ask yourself what fundamentals of photography were used in the photos aside from the three essential questions.
