FP (Focal Plane) Flash shooting is
possible with the Speedlite 380EX when it is used on any of the Type A EOS cameras,
allowing the camera to synchronize at all shutter speeds. This mode is useful when
you want to use larger apertures to get shallow depth-of-field for your fill-in flash
pictures in bright daylight situations, freeze movements or having a sense of motion.

The Speedlite 380EX allows bounce
flash photography with its tilting flash head up to 90-degree in the horizontal format.
It is not possible to use bounce flash in the vertical format since the flash head
does not rotate to the left or right side, unlike its more powerful sibling, the
Speedlite 550EX.
