Canon Compact Battery Pack
E and Transistor Pack E Set.
One advantage the Transistor Pack
E has over both the Compact Battery Pack E and CP-E2 is the ability to fire off more
successive shots over a longer period. For example, if the two compact battery packs
allow you to shoot continuously at the rate of 5 fps for about two seconds before
the Speedlite needs to recycle, the Transistor Pack E allows you to do so for the
next five seconds - with a new set of alkaline batteries or a fully-charged Ni-Cd
Pack TP. In other words, if you are an EOS-1N user, you would have used up 30 frames
of a 36-exposure roll within these five seconds or the whole film altogether for
the EOS-3 at 7 fps or the EOS-1v at 9/10 fps!
Bounced flash with 540EZ/Transistor Pack E
The above two photos were shot
via bounced flash with the Transistor Pack E Battery Set attached to the Speedlite
540EZ using an ISO 100. The effective film speed had dropped 2/3-stop (ISO 64) due
to the fact that the camera used was the Canon EOS-1N RS but the extra power of the
Transistor Pack E enabled me to shoot four successive (not continuous) photos via
bounced flash. Successive in the sense that the camera was set in its Single film
advance rate and the four shots were recorded within a six-second period. The C-size
batteries used then were already past its 50% level.
In another assignment, where I had a new set of C-size batteries and the Transistor
Pack E again attached to a Speedlite 430EZ, I was able to shoot four continuous photos
via bounced flash, as shown below.
I have been using the Transistor
Pack E Set long before the Compact Battery Pack E was made available. If you are
looking for an external battery pack for either your Speedlite 430EZ, 540EZ or 550EX,
it is more practical to go for either the Compact Battery Pack E or the CP-E2 if
compactness and lightweight are the major factors to consider in addition to the
use of AA-size batteries in both packs against the C-size types for the Transistor
Pack E Set. Unless you have the Speedlite 480EG, there is very little sense in choosing
the Transistor Pack E Set, with the Battery Pack TP or Ni-Cd Pack TP set for your
hot-shoe mounted Canon Speedlite.
