Review of the Canon 8x Loupe.

Back in issue No: 6, the Canon 4x Loupe was reviewed. Canon also offers an 8x Loupe but it was not available yet in the Malaysian market when the 4x version was first reviewed in this column. The 4x Loupe has been available since the first quarter of 1995 while the 8x version was made available from the last quarter of 1996 although it wasn't until two years later that most of the Asian markets outside Japan had it.

The 4x Loupe allows the photographer to see the full width of a 35mm negative or slide, even if the latter is mounted, with a crisp and clear image without any distortion. The 8x Loupe allows you to see an enlarged portion of the said 35mm negative or slide, almost like twice the size that you would be getting.

Almost like twice? Yes, that is exactly what you will get with the 8x Loupe's magnification. With the 4x Loupe, you will see instantly, even at a glance, the full view of the 35mm negative or slide, including the film's edges or the mounting. With the 8x Loupe, you can also see the entire view but not a glance, as it places special emphasis on a 24mm-diameter area at the center. In other words, you need to look left, up, right and down in order to see the entire view otherwise, it is only the center portion that will be more prominent to the eye.

The 8x Loupe is also shorter than the 4x version, has a smaller viewing area when compared to the latter (see first photo, below, top left) although both have the same overall diameters that the hoods, in black and translucent, may be interchangeable but is not advisable to do so. Like the 4x, the 8x Loupe also has an adjustable focusing ring that allows those with minor eyesight problems to see clearly.
