E-TTL autoflash, High-Speed Sync
(FP Flash) and FE Lock features can be utilized when the Speedlite 220EX is attached
to any of the above-mentioned Type A EOS cameras. The 220EX, unlike its more powerful
siblings, does not a have a motorized zoom flash head. The flash coverage angle is
fixed and equivalent to the view of a 28mm lens. When it is used with the two APS
EOS models, the flash coverage is good with lenses as wide as 22mm.
E-TTL stands for "Evaluative Through-The-Lens" flash exposure control.
It is a new flash mode that reads through the lens, but not off the film plane. This
revolutionary method, developed by Canon, also made it possible for the EX-series
Speedlites to be used for digital SLR cameras such as the EOS D2000/D6000 and the
new EOS D30 as conventional TTL flash metering will not be able to give accurate
exposures when reading off the CCD or CMOS sensor employed in these cameras.

When E-TTL autoflash metering is being used for fill-in flash situations, the results
are always excellent. In fact, for most cases, it is very hard to distinguish at
a glance, between a fill-in flash photo accomplished using E-TTL and those shot without
such illumination. Of the first two photos (above) of the various flowers, one was
shot under existing daylight and the other with fill-in E-TTL autoflash. Other than
filling up the shadow areas and enhancing the overall contrast, the E-TTL photo will
not look as though flash has been used. The exception to this is when comparing an
available light situation with a fill-in shot, such as the next two photos of the
lantern, from above.
Look at these two photos (below) of the pillars and pool. The give-away hint in the
second photo that it was shot using fill-in was the faint reflection in the center
pillar, which came from the Speedlite 220EX fitted to an EOS-1v camera.

The last photos in this page were both shot with the Speedlite 220EX in Shutter-priority
AE (Tv) mode. If not for the catch-light in the man's eyes (w/the drums), it would
not have looked as if fill-in flash was used in this shot. The street artist having
a chat with an interested fan also did not look as though fill-in flash was used
at all until a careful look revealed faint shadows of the artist's hands falling
onto her left knee.
