Like the GR-E1, the newer GR-E2 can be used for all the previous editions of the EOS-1 series and EOS-3 models. However, it cannot be fitted to the Canon EOS-1N RS, which has a permanently attached PDB-E1.

Not possible with the EOS-1N RS

Usable with the Canon EOS-3

I did have some time to actually use the newer GR-E2 on the EOS-1V when it was made available to me in April 2000, where I tested it on the World Motorcycling Championship, complete with the PB-E2. The GR-E2 was installed on one occasion during the Championship event, mainly because I had too many 2CR5 batteries lying around and it was a suitable event to try out the accessory grip.

Indeed, the GR-E2 worked very well on the EOS-1V whenever there was a need to travel on a much lighter package as compared to being fitted with the PB-E2 (Total weight: EOS-1V w/GR-E2 = 945 grams, EOS-1V w/PB-E2 = 1380 grams). Of course, many local photographers have their EOS-1s, EOS-1Ns, EOS-3s and EOS-1Vs permanently fitted with their respective Power Boosters even though they may not be shooting fast-moving subjects at all.

Can't really blame them for preferring to configure their cameras this way, either since it is much more economical to use eight pieces of AA-size alkaline batteries than it is with 1 unit of 2CR5 lithium. However, for photographers with large hands, it makes more sense to have the EOS-1 series and EOS-3 models to be fitted with either the PDB-E1 or PB-E2 since the camera bodies alone will be too small for them to hold with comfort and ease.

For a photographer specializing in travel photography, the above scenes (except for the last, at lower right) exemplifies the use of the EOS-1V with its standard GR-E2 Grip since rapid-firing capability of 5, 6, 7 or 9 fps is not necessary for such assignments. Even the shot of the Team Roberts-Proton Modenas mechanics at work setting up the GP bike can be photographed with the EOS-1V fitted with its GR-E2 alone.
