Perhaps, the home-made bounce card's effectiveness is more pronounced in taking close-up subjects rather than normal shots. This series of photos showing the keypads of a cellular phone was photographed in three ways: bounced flash, via the built-in card and the home-made version.

There is nothing wrong with the conventional bounced flash shooting except that more battery power was utilized for this shot. With the built-in card, exposure was slightly underexposed, which could be due to its smaller size that failed to direct the flash properly toward the keypads. The larger size of the home-made card, as can be seen from the set-up photo (above), enabled the light path to be dispersed wider and covered the keypads, resulting in a correctly-exposed photo.

The same method with the home-made card was utilized in the second photo of the 1:10-scale BMW motorcycle model (below), which is a close-up shot, providing some fill-in light to the engine. The first photo was shot with the Speedlite positioned upward at its 90-degree horizontal position with the home-made card attached.

In the photo of Singaporean actor/comedian Jack Neo and friends (above), the direct flash method gave a harsh look in the overall appearance as well as the reflection of the flash lighting from the wall behind them. In the photo that was shot with the home-made card, the overall appearance has taken on a much softer look, with the reflection in the wall almost diminished altogether.
Basically, any plastic material which is white or neutral in color can be used to make your very own bounce card for your EOS Speedlite. Such a bounce card can also be used for those EOS Speedlites that don't have a built-in wide panel like the discontinued 420EX and 430EZ.
