Canon Battery Pack BP-300.

The Canon Battery Pack BP-300 is an optional, external battery pack dedicated to both the Canon EOS 30 and EOS 33 models (EOS Elan 7E and Elan 7). The BP-300 enables the camera to be powered by widely-available AA-size batteries instead of the two CR123A (or DL 123A) lithium batteries used for these models. The BP-300 can use four AA-size alkaline, Ni-Cd or nickel-hydride batteries.

It can also accept two CR123A batteries by using the spacer inside the battery compartment to make the adjustments required for non-AA types. However, AA-size lithium batteries are not recommended to be used with the BP-300 as the initial voltage is high and may damage the camera's electronic circuitry. The Canon Hand Strap E-1 can be attached to the EOS 30/33 and BP-300 combination.

The BP-300 has a dry weight of 150 grams. The use of the BP-300 will not increase the shooting speed of the EOS 30/33 cameras as this accessory is not a power-booster and is designed as a vertical grip-cum AA-size battery holder for the convenience of the owners who may not want to use CR123A batteries. However, the shooting speed during AI Servo AF mode will vary slightly with AA-size batteries as compared to the CR123A types.

Instead of the 3.5 fps speed available when the camera is used with two CR123A batteries (with or without using the BP-300), you will only get 3 fps with four AA-size alkaline types in AI Servo AF mode. In One Shot AF mode, the shooting rate remains the same at 4 fps. Since both the EOS 30 and EOS 33 utilize the same CMOS sensor-based AF technology as with Canons EOS-3 and EOS-1V cameras, their focus tracking capabilities are as good as the top models, albeit at a slower firing rate. But nevertheless, they are very effective in capturing fast moving subjects such as Italian 500cc rider Valentino Rossi, shown by these 4-sequence shots below in AI Servo AF mode.

If the EOS 30/33 models' predictive autofocus were excellent as portrayed above, why would anyone want to buy the EOS-1V pro camera anymore?
