Magnification of the 500D with the
EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM zoom lens is 0.30x-0.14x (70mm: closest, infinity) while on
the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, it is at 0.20x-0.14x (70mm: closest, infinity) and 0.52x-0.39x
(200mm: closest, infinity). The 77mm 500 D Close-up Lens version has a total diameter
of 80mm, an overall length at 13.5mm and a dry weight of 145 grams. These photos
below of the magnetic 1998 Commonwealth Games Mascot, Wira, were also photographed
with the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM zoom lens/500D combination.

Autofocus is possible with the Close-up Lens attached but Canon recommends that manual
focus be used by setting the lens to its closest focusing distance and moving nearer
to the subject until focus is achieved. It will help too; if the built-in beep function
is switched on to let you know when the correct focus has been achieved as you close
in on the subject.
Canon also recommends stopping down the aperture to f/5.6 or f/8 will yield the best
results. It is also not advisable to have more than one Close-up Lens to be attached
to the prime lens as this will lead to poor image quality or vignetting. Any skylight
or UV filter that is attached to the prime lens is to be removed before fitting the
Close-up Lens.
Obviously, the longer the focal length of the prime lens coupled with its closest
focusing distance, the larger it will be for the magnification of the small objects
that can be photographed with the Close-up Lens 500D. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
zoom lens has a closest focusing distance of 1.5m/5 ft at all focal lengths. Set
it to the 200mm position and the closest focusing distance, the subject's magnification
will be obvious indeed.
These photos below of a Canon EOS-1V tiepin, both the US and Malaysian 1 penny coins
were photographed with both the EF 28-70mm f/2.8L USM (70mm) and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L
USM lens.

At 0.52x magnification (slightly more than 1:2 life-size) with the EF 70-200mm zoom
lens set at its 200mm position and at the closest focusing distance, this is indeed
one close-up capability made possible simply by attaching the Close-up Lens 500D.
The EOS-1V tiepin shown above may not give you an idea of how small it is but the
accompanying two pennies would definitely reveal its overall size. The 0.52x photo
shown here is full-frame with no cropping.
