When the 540EZ is used in the Shutter-priority AE mode with any EOS camera, fill-in flash is possible regardless of the shutter speeds set (X-sync speed or slower). The camera may warn of over-or-underexposure of the background (but correct exposure for the main subject) if the shutter speed selected is inappropriate for that scene.

When the camera warns of underexposure of the background but you choose to shoot anyway, the image will be shot at the lens maximum aperture and you will not have adequate depth-of-field to cover the zone of sharpness over your intended subject and its surroundings.

If you prefer to shoot using Aperture-priority AE mode, the aperture you selected may give you the required depth-of-field but at the expense of slower shutter speeds which could be too slow for hand-held shootings altogether. From the look of things, you would have thought that using the Speedlite 540EZ and EOS camera combination is a nightmare, right?

Wrong. The autoflash system of Canon's A-TTL and TTL are designed to balance the ambience lighting with the main subject, hence the somewhat "complicated" methods that were programmed into both the camera's and Speedlite's systems. Once you have mastered this "so-called complicated" flash lighting system, you won't have any more problems using the 540EZ in any shooting situations.

To prove my point, here are some photos shot with the EOS-1N and Speedlite 540EZ and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM zoom lens (with ISO 100 film) at Canon USA's booth during the PMA Show '97 held at New Orleans, Louisiana. All three photos were shot at 1/60 sec. at f/2.8. The photos retained all the ambient light while providing balanced fill-in flash to the subjects.
