To see the differences between photos shot with and without fill-in flash, here are two more examples of the same event (with different dancers than the above). In Photo A, the flash was switched off and shot using available light provided by the multiple-coloured spotlights used for the show. In Photo B, the Speedlite was switched on and was shot in Shutter-priority AE mode, giving just the correct amount of fill-in flash needed for correct exposure while retaining the ambience lighting in the dancers and background.

A similar look and is also evident in Photo C, where a different female dancer dressed in black has joined the same guy in the above photos. But instead of shooting at the 1/60 setting, I have reduced the shutter speed to 1/15 sec. instead. This was done in order to show some motion in the rapid movements of the dancers involved. The sense of motion is more apparent in Photo D where the movements can be seen clearly.

The PMA Show photos were partly helped by the bright amount of ambience lighting present. But what to do when the ambience lighting may not be that bright to facilitate pleasant looking flash pictures? That is not a problem. You will have a choice of using direct TTL flash in TV, AV or Programmed AE modes with the Speedlite 540EZ or you can opted to bounce the flash off the ceiling or the wall. As EOS users and other photo enthusiasts alike can recalled in issue No.8 of The Art of Photography which dealt with lighting, direct flash can be unpleasant in most cases since the overall results can be rather flat.

Due to its fill-in flash programming when used in both TV and AV shooting modes, the Speedlite 540EZ offers realistic looking images even when direct TTL flash is being used on the subjects. Don't believe it? Here are examples of some portraits of HK artiste, Kelly Chen, shot during a news conference sometime back. The four photos show the differences between direct TTL and bounced TTL flash of the 540EZ Speedlite.

Overall, the Speedlite 540EZ is indeed the ideal companion to the EOS-1N camera.
