The Battery Magazine PB-E2 accepts 8 AA-size alkaline, lithium or rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries. The optional Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 has similar shape as the magazine's contour and is designed exclusively for use with the Power Drive Booster PB-E2. It cannot be used with the Power Drive Booster E1 made for the Canon EOS-1N camera.

The Canon Ni-MH Pack NP-E2's built-in metal hydride batteries provide high shooting capacity even at low temperatures. The Ni-MH Pack is not charged before shipment. Be sure to charge the pack before using it for the first time.

The Ni-MH pack will naturally discharge even if they are not used. Therefore, users should fully charge the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 at least once every six months or so. If is not used for a long time, the pack may not charge to its maximum capacity. If this happens, discharge and recharge the pack several times to restore the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 to its full capacity.

Canon recommends that users should charge the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 at a temperature of between 0-degree C/32-degree F and 40-degree C/104-degree F. If the pack is charged outside this temperature, the pack may leak, overheat or be damaged resulting in burns or other injuries to the user.

How the Charger NC-E2's plug is connected to the Ni-MH Pack's socket
The Canon Ni-MH Charger NC-E2 is exclusively designed to charge and discharge the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2. Two Ni-MH NP-E2 batteries can be connected and charged simultaneously.

To charge, first remove the cover protecting the charging socket on the NP-E2 and insert the charging/discharging plug into the socket. The CHARGE lamp (red) will light up and the NP-E2 pack begins to charge.

Users can use either plug A or B to charge or discharge the packs. Each Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 takes about 100 minutes to charge. The CHARGE lamp blinks rapidly (twice a second) when charging is completed.

To charge two NP-E2 batteries in succession, charge the first battery as described above. The second battery will be charged automatically after the first battery has been fully charged. The CHARGE lamp for the battery that is waiting to be charged blinks slowly (once every two seconds) while the other pack is being charged.

Unlike the Ni-Cd Charger E1 designed for the Ni-Cd Pack E1 made for the Canon EOS-1 and EOS-1N cameras, the Ni-MH Charger NC-E2 can also discharge any Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 that still has some power left in it. This feature comes in handy for users who may want to have a fully charged pack before going for an important shooting assignment.

The NP-E2 Pack is inserted to the PB-E2 just like a regular Battery Magazine E2.
