In performance, the Canon EOS-3
w/Power Drive Booster PB-E2 fitted with a fully charged Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 really does
live up to its breathtaking experience of zipping the film through at a firing rate
of 7 fps, even the camera is used at the AI Servo AF tracking mode.
As I have stated earlier, the
Canon EOS-1 RS is lethal camera when it comes to capturing fast moving subjects like
500cc motorcycling GPs. Although it can't use its rapid firing rate of 10 fps in
the AI Servo AF mode, the RS has a higher success ratio of sharper images in its
continuous shooting mode of 5 fps as compared to the standard EOS-1N w/Power Booster
Drive E1 or the EOS-3 w/Power Drive Booster PB-E2 fitted with size AA-type of batteries.
With the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 fitted
into the Power Drive Booster of the EOS-3, the differences in performances between
the EOS-1N RS and the former are crystal clear. With 7 frames per second in AI Servo
AF mode, there are very few subjects which the Canon EOS-3 w/Power Drive Booster
PB-E2 combination is not able to capture.
These 9-sequence shots of the
five-time world 500cc champion Michael Doohan was part of a 15 succesive shots that
I have captured using the Canon EOS-3/Power Drive Booster PB-E2 fitted with the Ni-MH
Pack PB-E2. All but the fifth frame is slightly less snappy than the rest which are
tack-sharp but being the resolutions of the PC or Mac monitors as they are, the EOS
users and other photo enthusiasts alike may not be able notice the differences in
sharpness anyway.

If you are already the owner of a
Canon EOS-3 and the Power Drive Booster PB-E2, should you invest in the Ni-MH Charger
NC-E2 and the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2?
That depends on what type of photography
work you are shooting. If your work includes FIA's Formula-1, FIM's Motorcycling
GPs and any international or local SPORTING event, then these two accessories for
the EOS-3 are indispensable.
If your work is confined to shooting
travels, portraits, glamour, fashion or other commercial stuff, the standard 6 fps
firing rate of the PB-E2 is more than enough for your rapid shooting needs with the
Canon EOS-3 camera.
