Reviews of Canon Power Drive Booster, Ni-MH Pack and its Charger.

The newly-introduced Canon EOS-3 AF 35mm SLR camera is a model aimed at the advanced amateurs and professional photographers. Used alone, the EOS-3 has a built-in firing rate of 4.3 frames-per-second (fps). For users who need a faster shooting rate than this, Canon has the new Power Drive Booster PB-E2 unit for the EOS-3 that can use eight AA-size alkaline, lithium or rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries.

In addition, users also have a choice of Canon's Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 that can be charged using the Ni-MH Charger NC-E2 for the Power Drive Booster PB-E2. Aside from being economical in the long term (the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 has a life-span of 500 charges), the use of the pack will also boost the firing rate of the camera/PB-E2 combo to 7 fps even during continuous AI Servo AF mode. The EOS-3/PB-E2 combo has a maximum rate of 5 fps in the same shooting mode if the power source used are AA-size alkaline, lithium or rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries and 6 fps in One Shot AF and Manual Focus modes.

How the Battery Magazine is attached to the PB-E2

When the PB-E2 is attached to the Canon EOS-1 or EOS-1N cameras, it can attain about 5.5 and 6 fps respectively in the One Shot AF and Manual focus shooting modes using any of the three types of AA-size batteries. Firing rate is reduced to 4.5 & 5 fps respectively when the PB-E2 is used with the EOS-1/EOS-1N cameras in the AI Servo AF shooting modes.

However, use of the Canon Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 is not possible with the EOS-1/EOS-1N cameras as the higher voltage of the pack may damage these cameras' electronic circuitry.

The PB-E2 also has the following vertical-grip controls which give the same camera operation ease as horizontal shooting:

1. Shutter button
2. Main Dial
3. AE Lock button
4. Focusing point selector
5. FE Lock/multi-spot metering button

*With the EOS-1 and EOS-1N cameras, only the shutter and AE Lock buttons on the vertical grip will function.
