This new lens, with a maximum angle
of view of 104°, uses a large aspherical lens for element 15 (rear element).
It corrects distortion and greatly improves definition at the corners of the frame.
A built-in gelatin filter-holder is on the rear of the lens.
The front lens element is also an aspherical element, which is also used to correct
barrel distortion that is prone to occur with wide-angle zooms. Images are sharp
and snappy at all focal lengths.
Floating elements as well as the USM make autofocusing fast and quiet and help provide
better image quality at close subject distances. Full-time manual focusing is also
provided.
Since the lens does not rotate during focusing, the attached circular polarizing
filter will not be affected. Also, the large, petal type hood blocks out stray light
at all focal lengths.
To give you an idea how the angle of view changes from the 35mm setting all the way
to its super-wide 17mm focal length end, look at these five photos below showing
where Kuala Lumpur's famed Gombak and Klang rivers meet.
