The powerful potential of the newly-developed 35-zone Evaluative metering system is really exploited thanks to Canon's AIM System. AIM (Advanced Integrated Multipoint) links the camera's focusing and exposure functions to continuously deliver the highest quality exposures.

The brighter facade of the building does not affect the overall exposure.

The focusing system tells the exposure system where the subject is positioned within the frame, giving greater importance to the meter readings taken from the main subject when determining the final exposure. In the EOS 300, AIM now integrates the 7-point focusing with the 35-zone metering system to provide extremely powerful subject analysis even with subjects on the move.

7-point AF? Yes, that's right. The EOS 300 is equipped with 7-point AF feature, four more than what the EOS 500N has and two more than what the EOS 5 or EOS-1N cameras have. The two additional AF points are located just above and below the other 5-point spaced within the viewfinder. They are excellent for tracking subjects that moving towards or away from the camera or stationary ones when it is used in the vertical format.

Back to the camera's exposure metering; so the EOS 300 is able to shoot pictures in with subjects immersed in extremely bright light or backlighted conditions. But how does it handle brightly-coloured subjects that are likely to fool other types of built-in metering systems? Or subjects that are whites or pure black in colours?

No problem. As these two abstract photos of the cars shows, the reflective tendency of their surfaces do not affect the EOS 300's ability to render correct exposures on the black tyres and chrome rims since the camera's 7-point AF system has taken into consideration the exposure values within the frame.

On the next photo of the black car parked against the blue-coloured background, the EOS 300's 35-zone metering system deliver just the right amount of exposure needed to render both the car and the steel wall effectively.
