Field-test of the Canon IXUS II
Extreme APS camera.
Canon is one of the major camera
manufacturers that have agreed to develop and promote the new 24mm photographic format
known as the Advanced Photo System (APS) since the idea was mooted five years ago.
Canon's part in the APS system is to manufacture compact point & shoot AF cameras
to take advantage of the smaller negative format (24mm) as well as the IX Data coding
known as PQI (Print Quality Improvement) that can be recorded in the film following
exposure.
In the first two years of the new format's debut in 1996/1997, all the other major
film and camera manufacturers except Canon, have designed their APS compact cameras
to be as large as their 35mm point & shoot versions, thus proving wrong any predictions
for a truly compact camera system.
Canon's first APS offering was the IXUS IX 240, (known as the ELPH in the North American
market) a compact AF camera with built-in 2x zoom lens and encased in a stylish stainless
steel body. Its size is no bigger than a calendar or credit card and the thickness
of a king-size cigarette pack.
It was not a surprise when the IXUS IX 240 became the best selling APS camera in
the world. Canon Inc sold out 3,000 units of its first production batch (of 6,000)
in Japan alone while the balance was for the export market.
The reason for the IXUS' success is its ultra-compact size, which also makes it look
cute. It also became the most-talked about "accessory" item among celebrity
fashion designers, supermodels and Hollywood personalities. And every celebrity was
eager to have one.
And now Canon is proud to present the new IXUS camera, known as the IXUS II Extreme
(in South-East Asian markets). Like the original model, the new IXUS is small, slim
and, sexy. You will not want to go anywhere without the new IXUS II.

It's extremely easy to handle too. Even though Canon made the IXUS II Extreme the
world's smallest 2x zoom APS camera, the operating buttons and LCD display are big.
They are located at the back of the Extreme, where it is easier to see and use.
