If you only need a 50mm lens as a
standby unit whenever there is an opportunity to snap some really good available
light pictures, the budget-priced EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the best choice. If your need
is much more specialised and you demand a certain amount of reliability against rough
usage, the more expensive EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is the logical choice.
Go for the EF 50mm f/1.0L USM, the world's fastest lens ever made for any AF 35mm
SLR cameras only if you have one of these two reasons:
1) Basketball and other indoor sports photography is your livelihood.
2) You have enough money to spend on exotic lenses like this.
