Review of Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM standard lens.

With a natural angle of view and perspective, standard lenses capture the subject plainly, with no special effects like exaggerating or compression of lenses' perspectives. The result is different from a wide-angle or telephoto lenses that are used for more expressive purposes. At the same time, however, you can use standard lenses in creative ways by varying the subject distance, aperture and angle. Doing so requires a high level of technique and sensibility. There are three standard 50mm EF lenses in the Canon EOS line-up, each featuring a different maximum aperture.

The three are the EF 50mm f/1.0L USM, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and EF 50mm f/1.8II.

In this issue, photography enthusiasts can learn more about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard Lens. Constructed with 7 elements in 6 groups, this EF lens is an improved version of the popular FD 50mm f/1.4 standard lens that was made for Canon's manual-focus 35mm SLR cameras.

As with its FD counterpart, which was used as Canon's benchmark for colour balance for the entire manual focus FD lenses group, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens is also used as the benchmark in the same category for the autofocus EF lenses group.
