Field-test of the Canon EOS-1N
AF 35mm professional SLR camera.
September 1999 marked the fifth anniversary
of the Canon EOS-1N Professional AF 35mm SLR camera. Within this period, the EOS-1N,
like its predecessor, the EOS-1, has become the preferred choice of working photographers
the world over.
It has become the standard pro model by which others are measured. Designed with
input from demanding professionals, the Canon EOS-1N is a camera destined for greatness.
A camera that will be a true extension of your eye and your mind, and a versatile,
high-precision picture-making tool that will allow you to fully express your creativity.

With new system accessories that include the Speedlite 540EZ (reviewed in Films and
Accessories issue No: 8), a powerful flash unit with a multitude of improvements
over the earlier 430EZ model, like the exposure confirmation signal. Also introduced
with the EOS-1N is the Battery Pack BP-E1, a compact power supply grip that features
a choice between 6-volt lithium and AA-size batteries.
The EOS-1N was designed to build on the strength of its predecessor, the EOS-1, a
camera that revolutionized the professional market, and is incorporated with new
technologies and design concepts to fill professionals' wish lists: Five-point autofocus
using a new high-precision Multi-BASIS (Base-Stored Image Sensor) for wide area coverage.
Faster shooting speed - up to 6 frames/sec with Power Booster E1. And a choice of
5 metering modes, which include 16-zone Evaluative. Three-zone flash metering linked
to the focusing point. Super-quiet rewinding. And six more (total 14) Custom Functions,
including mirror lock, for enhanced operational flexibility.
However, with the introduction of the EOS-3 camera in September 1998, the prestigious
status of the EOS-1N has been upstaged somewhat by the more advanced features of
the new model. The EOS-3 has among its list of features, a 32-bit CMOS microcomputer,
45-point AF, E-TTL flash and 7 frames-per-second film advance with the new Power
Drive Booster PB-E2.
But the EOS-1N remains as Canon's top-of-the-line model in the EOS line-up. Despite
the advanced features available in the EOS-3, the EOS-1N still has five advantages,
which the former does not have. They are:
- Built-in eyepiece shutter
- Built-in dioptric adjustment
- 100 per cent viewfinder coverage
- 1/250 sec. X-sync speed
- More synthetic leather in camera
body for added grip
