Telephoto zoom lenses are used especially to isolate the main subject from the other
elements such as a busy or distracting background by blurring them out of focus or
simply cropped the image in the viewfinder till you have simplify the image by blocking
out the unnecessary elements.
Photo (top, left) of a commercial district shot at 70mm has a lot of distractions
of parked cars, especially the 4x4 in the foreground. Photo (bottom, left) was shot
at the 200mm setting, isolating the buildings from the other elements.
First is the weight. Most professionals would tell you that a fast zoom lens is heavier
than a fast single focal length lens. What they usually don't tell you is that one
zoom lens needs less space and weight to carry around in your camera bag. Consider
this: with the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM, one does not need to carry other additional
fixed focal length lenses like an 85mm, 100mm, 135mm and 200mm lenses.
