Field-test of the Canon EF 50mm
f/1.8 II standard lens.
In issue No: 2, the EF 50mm f/1.4
USM was tested and more recently, the most expensive standard lens in the EF line-up,
the EF 50mm f/1.0L USM was tested in issue No: 21. The latter is also the world's
fastest interchangeable lens for SLR camera. For those who can't afford to buy either
of these two standard lenses, Canon has a budget version designed especially for
them, the EF 50mm f/1.8 II.
With a natural angle of view and perspective, standard lenses capture the subject
plainly, with no special effects. The result is different from a wide-angle or telephoto
lens, which is used for more expressive purposes. At the same time however, you can
use standard lenses in creative ways by varying the subject distance, aperture and
angle of view. Doing so requires a high level of technique and sensibility.
At a mere 130 grams, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the lightest EF lens of all. Compact
and lightweight, its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing
distances as well as an excellent color balance. Its filter size is 52mm and the
construction has 6 elements in 5 groups. The lens' closest focusing distance is 0.45m/1.5
ft while the minimum aperture is f/22. The maximum magnification is 0.15x. For an
even closer magnification, the lens can be fitted with either the Extension Tube
EF 12 or EF 25.
