Field-test of the Canon EF 300mm
f/4L IS USM Telephoto lens.
The EF 300mm f/4L IS USM is the first
Image Stabilizer lens to offer two modes to compensate for hand movements: Mode 1
is highly effective for still subjects, and Mode 2 is designed for panning with moving
subjects. The IS function is effective with all EOS cameras when the lens is used
by itself or with the EF Extender 1.4x, and it continues to function with the 2x
Extender when used with the EOS-3, EOS-1N/1N RS, the new EOS-1V pro camera and entry-level
models like the EOS 300 (EOS Rebel 2000), EOS 500N (EOS Rebel G) as well as the EOS
50/50E.
The optical system features two UD lenses that effectively suppress chromatic aberration
for superb image quality. The AF system features Ring USM with Full-time Manual focusing
(FT-M). The focusing range can be switched between 1.5m~infinity or 3m~infinity.
The EF 300mm f/4L IS USM is also supplied with a detachable tripod collar and built-in
lens hood. Also lightweight and rugged, this L-series telephoto lens greatly expands
the horizons of hand-held photography.
The lens was introduced in early 1997 and very soon became a favorite with professional
photographers specializing in sports and travel photography. Its optical system is
based on the proven EF 300mm f/4L USM telephoto lens, and added with the Image Stabilizer
elements to provide the IS feature. The inclusion of the IS elements only added 25
grams to the overall weight (1190 g) of the lens, making hand-held shooting much
easier than ever.
With a closest focusing distance of 1.5m (as opposed to 2.5m for the non-IS version),
you can see why this lens is a very much favored by professionals. The IS function
aside, the EF 300mm f/4L IS USM can also be used for normal photography session when
you are not shooting with slower shutter speeds like landscape, glamour, still-life
and candid shots.
