Exposure accuracy with the Canon EOS-1v

Like I have mentioned earlier, just how accurate the exposure with the EOS-1v will be is greatly dependent on whether you have use the right AF point to lock onto the subject. If the AF point has locked onto the wrong area, the overall exposure will be based on that location and the camera will set the values based on what it "thinks" to be the right ones. When this happens, donít blame the EOS-1v. Look at your photos and study what went wrong if they turned out to be not what you had expected from this excellent pro-level camera.

Here are some more examples of how the EOS-1v can give you the wrong exposures when the incorrect AF point is used for a particular area and the correct way to rectify them.

As any EOS user knows, when an EOS camera is used in the One Shot AF mode in conjunction with the Evaluative metering (whether it is a three, six, sixteen, twenty-one or thirty-five zone), exposure is locked automatically when the focus has been achieved. However, in AI Servo AF, the exposure reading will not be locked and the camera is free to change the exposure value down to the moment of exposure whenever the light level changes.

In this mode, the metering value will be based on the center AF point regardless of the EOS model. There is, however, a way to overcome this but only with EOS models having the Custom Functions built in, including the EOS-1v. Just choose C.Fn-4-1 where the AE Lock feature will be relegated to the shutter button and the AF Start to the button vacated by the former. This will ensure that the exposure is locked upon the shutter button being pressed halfway even if the focus has not been achieved.

The EOS-1v's has 72 water- and dust-resistant sealing thoroughly employed, making it the most weather-resistant EOS model ever and it can be used for any assignment to be performed in all weather conditions such as rain, humid and dusty environments. Shown above are two examples that were shot during bad weather - it was only a slight drizzle, not much difference as the EOS-1N can be subjected to this condition as well. However, I will focus more on the EOS-1v's reliability and weather-resistant sealing in future issues of The Art of Photography column.
