High-speed continuous shooting with PB-E2 and Ni-MH Pack NP-E2

Now we have come to an interesting question - how accurate is the claim that the Canon EOS-1v can track a moving subject at 9 fps in AI Servo AF mode using the PB-E2 loaded with the Ni-MH Pack NP-E2? Well, I have a chance to prove it during the Malaysian leg of the 2000 FIM World Motorcycling Championship held in April.

Can the EOS-1v live up to its reputation? Yes and No.

Yes, the EOS-1v can track a moving subject at up to 9fps in its AI Servo AF mode, including the 500cc GP bikes capable of reaching a top speed of 320 km/hr. No, in the sense that sometimes it is just not possible to have all nine or more frames of continuous focus tracking of the same subject - you either run of space to capture it or you couldn't pan the camera/lens combination fast enough to follow the whole action.

Having said that, the EOS-1v with PB-E2/Ni-MH Pack NP-E2 combo does certainly focus faster than any camera I have ever used, including the much-respected EOS-1N RS model. This camera can only track a moving subject at 5 fps in its AI Servo AF mode but I find it to be more accurate than any other EOS, including the standard Canon EOS-1N w/PDB-E1 and EOS-3 w/PB-E2 (when loaded with eight AA-size batteries).

With the EOS-1v and PB-E2 loaded with Ni-MH Pack NP-E2, all the other AF 35mm SLR cameras don't even come close in terms of focus-tracking accuracy. Of course, you may think I am exaggerating on this but that's the truth. When you have been covering the Bike GP year after year, like what I have been doing with every pro-level AF 35mm SLR available, you can notice the difference with the EOS-1v in your hands.

The lens I used for the Motorcycling Grand Prix was the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM fitted with Extender EF 2x. I find the EOS-1v/PB-E2/EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM combination to be excellent in capturing the GP bikes, whether they are moving across the frame or approaching the camera. The sequence shots below and on the next page are testimonies to the claims.
