Manual Exposure
This mode assigns the aperture value and shutter speed to two electronic dials, allowing
the user to quickly and simply set the intended exposure without veering away from
the viewfinder. In the default setting, the Main Dial adjusts shutter speed and the
Quick Control Dial sets the aperture value. But this dial arrangement can be changed
with Custom Function 5-0 to 5-3.
With an advanced 21-zone Evaluative metering as well as Partial, Spot, Fine Spot
and Multi-spot options in the EOS-1v, you will be wondering whether the Manual exposure
will still be used by professionals. The answer is Yes. There are still many photographers
who prefer to rely on the Center weighted average metering for their metering needs
and setting the shutter speed and aperture value manually because they simply do
not trust the camera to do that for them. Makes one wonder why such people invest
in the EOS System in the first place.
Personally, I have only come across one professional photographer who used his EOS-1
series cameras in complete manual mode - focusing, shutter speed and aperture selection
from the period of December 1989 till April 2000. Of course, for those who used EOS
cameras in the studio with non-Canon Speedlites and non-TTL accessories, the Manual
exposure mode is essential. The Marlboro World of Sports promoters was photographed
with the EOS-1v in its Manual exposure mode at 1/30 sec at f/2.8 with the EF 70-200mm
f/2.8L zoom lens set at the 100mm position.

The woman at the souvenir stall (above,
left) was photographed at 1/60 sec at 3.5 in Manual mode with the EF 100mm f/2.0
USM lens. My setting was 1/3-stop less than what the camera had suggested at 1/60
sec at f/3.2 - based on what the exposure data obtained via the central AF point
with the 21-zone Evaluative metering. Nevertheless, my own setting wasn't quite off
the mark, as the overall rendition didn't show any exposure error. The next photo
of the Muslim woman looking straight at the camera was also shot with the same setting
- her skin tone had the same light value as the woman in the previous shot. Of course,
the camera would have suggested a different light value if the meter reading were
concentrated on the guy instead.
Bulb
Bulb is essential for shooting night scenes, fireworks and for astronomical photography.
It offers continual exposure for as long as the shutter button is fully depressed.
Bulb exposure lapse time can be displayed on the EOS-1v's large LCD panel for up
to 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. The design of the EOS-1v's shutter system
means that no battery power is required to hold down the second curtain open during
bulb exposure.
